Prof. K. A. V. Pandalai gives away a Ph.D. degree during the 13th convocation, 1976

In this photograph, Director K. A. V. Pandalai is seen giving away a degree to a female Ph.D. scholar. Faculty members of the Institute are seen seated in the background. During the 13th convocation, which took place on 20 August 1976, 574 degrees were awarded in total. Out of these, the departments of Mechanical Engineering (131 degrees) and Electrical Engineering (110 degrees) obtained the highest number of degrees awarded. During the year, approximately 21 female students graduated from the Institute. Out of these, around 5 female students completed their Ph.D.

During the year 1976, 11.08 percent of students from B. Tech. and 9.58 percent of students from M. Tech. graduated from IIT Madras with ‘distinction’. 76.42 percent of students from B. Tech. and 79.05 percent of students from M. Tech. graduated during the year with ‘first class’.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
