Prof. P. C. Varghese addresses the audience at the Third Inter-IIT Sports Meet, 1964

Puthenveetil Chandapillai Varghese joined IIT Madras in 1961 after working for a few years at IIT Kharagpur. Prof. Varghese served as Head of Department of Civil Engineering Department in IIT Madras from 1962 to 1973. He was the Gymkhana President from 1964 up to 1967 after which Prof N. Klein took charge.

The Third Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras for the first time. During this event, the stadium was inaugurated by the Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan on the first day. The event took place from 28 to 31 December. This photograph was most likely taken on the evening of 31 December, when the prizes were distributed by the Chairman, Board of Governors.

Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
