This photograph was taken during the fusion show held during the second night of Saarang. According to a report in The Hindu, “Saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath and Moksha, the rock band, performed a fusion show on the second night.”
Kadri Gopalnath was born in 1950 in Karnataka. He was introduced to music by his father Thaniappan, a Nadaswaram vidwan. Gopalnath’s interest gravitated towards the saxophone over the years. It is said that he was inspired to pick up the saxophone after hearing the Mysore Palace band playing it. He mastered the instrument after several years of practice with the help of N. Gopalakrishna Iyer of Kalaniketan, Mangalore. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004 and also the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Carnatic instrumental music around the same time.
