Sardar Ujjal Singh at the inauguration of Alakananda hostel, 1966
This photograph was taken during the inauguration of the Alakananda hostel on the IIT Madras campus in 1966. Sardar Ujjal Singh was the chief guest for the occasion. Sardar Ujjal Singh was the Governor of Punjab (1 September 1965 – 26 June 1966) and the Governor of Tamil Nadu (28 June 1966 - 16 June 1967). In the front row of the photograph, from left to right are Mrs. Shanti Sengupto, the wife of Prof. B. Sengupto, Sardar Ujjal Singh, Mrs. Ujjal Singh and Prof. B. Sengupto (the first Director of IIT Madras).
