The event took place on 22 March at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT). The Indo-German agreement signed in 1986 made a provision for IIT Madras to receive the Siemens 7580-E computer system from the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). It was officially handed to IIT Madras by Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, FRG).

Seen in the photograph is Prof. H. N. Mahabala (Department of Computer Science, first row, fourth from left). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified. One of the audience members appears to be holding a video camera, possibly in order to record the function.
