The most looked forward to event at IIT Madras in the 60s was the annual Literary and Cultural Week. The first Literary and Cultural Week was held in 1964. Literary and Cultural Week became a very big part of the IITian culture and still is to this day under a different name, ‘Saarang’. The main events that took place at the Literary and Cultural Week were the quiz, German recitation, debate, group discussion and the entertainment competition. There were other events taking place as well such as the science fair, photography exhibition and art competition. Some of the trophies given to the winners for the main events were the Dr. N. Klein’s Trophy given to the winner of the inter-collegiate German recitation competition, the Dr. M. V. C. Sastry’s rolling trophy awarded to the winner of the inter-Collegiate group discussion and the Rao Bahadur Ramachandra Iyer trophy which was presented to the winner of the inter-collegiate quiz.
