A student is presented by the head of his department for the passing of Grace

At the sixth convocation a total of a total of 470 degrees and diplomas (321 B. Tech., 76 M. Tech., 30 M. Sc., 19 Ph. D. and 24 D. I. I. T.) were granted. The event commenced with an invocation, and the ceremony was declared open by Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (sixth Governor of the Reserve bank of India), the Chairman of the Board of Governors. This was followed by the department-wise ‘passing of Grace’. The head of each department respectively supplicates ‘Doth it please you that this Grace be passed’ to the members of the Board of Governors and Senate. After each member of the Board of Governors assents, the Grace is passed. The Director of the Institute handed out the degrees to the students.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
