Behind the students, in the photograph, a 1983 Mardi Gras poster announcing ‘The Ananda Shankar Experience’ is visible. Mr. Ananda Shankar was a famed Indian musician, composer, and singer. He was known to blend Western and Eastern styles of music. The year this photograph was taken, in 1983, Mr. Ananda Shankar performed music along with Pandit Ravishankar and Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Mardi Gras, now known as Saarang, was a cultural festival occurring annually for 5 days with dance, music, quiz, debate, sketching, photography, drama, and other competitions. Mardi Gras 1983 took place from 26 to 30 January 1983. From the name that this album was given, the album appears to comprise images from day 2 of Mardi Gras ‘83, meaning that this photograph was taken on 27 January 1983.

N. S. Vinodh. After completing an early education in Bangalore, N. S. Vinodh obtained his B. Tech. in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras in 1986. Being the secretary of the Photography Club at IIT Madras during his third year, he was an avid photography enthusiast. He then went on to complete his MBA from IIM, Lucknow, and later spent his career holding senior positions in the field of corporate real estate with leading multinational financial services companies. He continued to pursue his hobby of photography, integrating it with his love of travel and wildlife.
