Dr. V. V. Giri (President of India) hands out an award to a prize winner. Also seen standing on the dais is Prof. S. Sampath (Deputy Director). Seated behind the chief guest is Dr. Y. Nayudamma (Director, CLRI) who represented the Chairman, Board of Governors at the ceremony and seated on his right is Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, IITM).


At the seventh convocation, Prof. A. Ramachandran conferred the degrees and diplomas on 214 candidates, who attended the convocation and in absentia on 346 students. The chief speaker distributed prizes to the prize winners and delivered the convocation address. The President’s Prize was awarded to Mr. Sachindra Kumar Jain (3-year B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering), the Governor’s Prize was awarded to Mr. Monishi Mohan Sanyal (5-year B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering) and the Institute Special Merit Prize was awarded to Mr. T. T. Jagannathan (5-year B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering).

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
