Also seen standing on the dais is Mr. Rajagopalan (Deputy Registrar). The student receiving his degree appears to be a Ph.D. scholar as different robes were adorned by the graduates based on their degrees. Seen to the left of the image is a bust of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar that was unveiled by the chief guest at the event. The bust can be found at the Institute’s Heritage Centre today.


At the seventh convocation, Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, IITM) conferred the degrees and diplomas on 214 candidates, who attended the convocation and in absentia on 346 students. The chief speaker distributed prizes to the prize winners and delivered the convocation address. The President’s Prize was awarded to Mr. Sachindra Kumar Jain (3-year B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering), the Governor’s Prize was awarded to Mr. Monishi Mohan Sanyal (5-year B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering) and the Institute Special Merit Prize was awarded to Mr. T. T. Jagannathan (5-year B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering).

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
