In the photograph, the academic procession is pictured entering the Open Air Theatre and getting on to the dais in rows of two. In the photograph are Prof K. A. V. Pandalai (Director), Prof. S. K. Srinivasan (Department of Mathematics), Prof. K. T. Chandy (Chairman), Dr. M. S. Swaminathan (chief guest) and two faculty members, yet to be identified.

Prior to the Invocation an academic procession consisting of administrators, faculty members and the chief guest enter the convocation venue (here, the Open Air Theatre) led by the Registrar. The academic procession can be seen in the photograph, led by Mr. C.V. Sethunathan (Registrar).

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
