This photograph was taken during the Institute’s 20th convocation. The academic procession is a formation of two rows headed by the Registrar. The Director and the chief guest are the last two to enter the convocation hall. As the chief guest enters the hall, the first six bars of the national anthem are played.

Ramamurthy (Head of Civil Engineering Department), Prof. R. Kalyana Krishnan (Head of Computer Science and Engineering), Prof. A. V. Krishna Rao (Head of Humanities and Social Sciences Department), Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest), Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors), Prof. Kuppurajulu (Head of Electrical Engineering Department), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister of Education and Culture), Mr. Shanmugam (Deputy Registrar, later Registrar from 1988) and Mr. Veeraraghavan (Administrative Staff). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
