The academic procession enters the convocation hall, 1983

This photograph was taken during the Institute’s 20th convocation. The academic procession is a formation of two rows headed by the Registrar. The Director and the chief guest are the last two to enter the convocation hall. As the chief guest enters the hall, the first six bars of the national anthem are played. 

Seen in the photograph are, Prof. Surjit Singh (Chemistry Department, wearing red turban), Prof. Sankaran Subramanian (Chemistry Department, in front of Prof. Surjit Singh), Mr. A. M. M. Arunachalam (former Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras, in grey suit), Prof. M. A. Veluswami (Applied Mechanics Department, wearing a watch and second in the procession) and Mrs. Arunachalam (in a dark green sari). The other personalities in the photograph are yet to be identified.
