At the Alakananda Hostel inauguration, 1966
Inaugurations , Visiting VIPs , Hostels
The newly inaugurated hostel, Alakananda, was, in the IIT Madras tradition, named after an Indian river. Workshop Superintendent Mr. S. S. Mani (first Warden of Alakananda) is seen standing next to the chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras) who is seen interacting with students at the entrance of the hostel.
The interaction with students took place after the Governor’s speech, according to the April 1966 edition of Campastimes. According to the Annual Report of 1966-1967, 166 students were lodged in the newly inaugurated hostel. Mr. S. S. Mani was the Warden, while Mr. A. Angamuthu and Mr. N. Venkateswaran were Assistant Wardens. Alakananda Hostel was built as a quadrangle as opposed to early hostels which were open. The newer hostels which are built and those that are under construction (as of 2021) are multi-storeyed.
