Campus Facilities , Institute Events , Campus Buildings

The Central School at IIT Madras started operating, with classes from VI to IX, on July 20, 1964. Classes X and XI were introduced in June 1965 and June 1966, respectively. At the end of the academic year 1965 - 66, class VI had 45 students, class VII had 33, class VIII had 31, class IX had 14, and class X had 8. Now, the school has grown to accommodate students in classes I through XII, with a total enrolment of 1802 students and 45 staff members (as of March 31, 2020).

The new school building was designed to accommodate 720 students with four sections in each of the six standards (standard VI to standard XI). Two of the four sections were for boys, while the other two were for girls.

Seen in the picture, from the left: Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, IIT Madras), Mr. R. Natarajan (Registrar, IIT Madras), Dr. C. D. Deshmukh (Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi) and Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar, in a white suit (Member, Board of Governors). The two gentlemen on either side of Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar are yet to be identified.
