On the occasion of its inauguration, the Central School's entrance, lined with potted plants, was carpeted and decked with colourful bunting. The picture shows people gathered outside the school's entrance, either before or after the inauguration ceremony. This entrance, however, is no longer the main entrance to the school. The second entrance was possibly built later in time.
The Central School at IIT Madras started operating on July 20, 1964. The new school building was officially inaugurated by Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) on January 20, 1965.
The new school building was equipped with large classrooms, laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, a library and well-equipped administrative offices. There were also facilities for basketball, football, hockey, cricket, volleyball, badminton, ring tennis, and throwball in the school grounds. This Central School is part of a network of 1251 schools established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, both in India and abroad. The name ‘Central School’ was later changed to Kendriya Vidyalaya.
