This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. The event was held at the Student Activities Centre (SAC). The Centre was a newly constructed building. It provided an indoor facility for convocations to be held as opposed to the Open Air Theatre (OAT) where rains would often cause difficulties during convocations and events.

Seen in the photograph are Mrs. Jaya Indiresan (wife of Prof. P. V. Indiresan, second from left), Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest, in centre), Mrs. Manjit Kaur (daughter of Mr. Singh, extreme right), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister of Education and Culture, second from right) and behind Mrs. Kaul, Dr. H. V. Hande (Minister of Health).
