This photograph was taken on the occasion of the official handing of the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras. Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) was the chief guest at the event. The Siemens 7580-E computer system made computing a lot easier as it would not require one to use punch cards. According to a Campastimes interview, 80 terminals had arrived from Siemens. They were to be distributed across the campus, while the Computer Centre would have 30-35.

The persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
