Seen in the image from the left: Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, IITM) and Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors). The location of the event appears to be outside the Central Library building. The Institute’s library moved to a new building on 21st July, 1967, and an event was held to celebrate the inauguration of this Central Library. During the event the audience was addressed by the Director (Prof. B. Sengupto), Chief Librarian (Mr. Nazir Ahmed), Deputy Director (Prof. S. Sampath) and the Chairman of the Board of Directors (Dr. A. L. Mudaliar) who inaugurated the library and lit…

The photograph shows the second version of Gajendra Circle (GC). The first version consisted of four small elephants at the base of a lamp post. This version of Gajendra Circle in the photograph consists of two larger elephants and two human figures. The building under construction in the background is the Administration Block. It was completed with all services and occupied in December 1968. According to the Annual Report of 1968, it was the tallest building in the Institute when it was completed. This photograph may have been taken probably a year or two before the completion of the…

This building is located on Delhi Avenue. It was opened on 21 July 1967 by Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (the first Chairman of the Board of Governors). This was the third place to serve as the IIT Madras Library, the first being on the third floor of A. C. College of Technology (until August 1961) and the second being on the second floor of the Building Sciences Block (until July 1967).  The building in the photograph, which served as the Central Library for 33 years is now the IIT Madras Department of Management Studies (DoMS). According to the 1967 Convocation Brochure of IIT Madras, “The N.C.C. Building on the Institute Campus was declared open in December 1965 by Major General Virendra Singh.” Major General Virendra Singh was the Director-General of NCC who visited IIT Madras on 14 December 1965 to inaugurate the NCC building and also take part in the NCC Day celebrations which was on the same day. This building currently (as of September 2022) serves as the JEE/GATE office. It is located adjacent to the Department of Engineering Design and opposite to the Department of Ocean Engineering. In the 1966 Convocation Brochure of IIT Madras, it is mentioned that a new block was constructed to house the Metrology Laboratory. It is noted that “This building will be utilized both for Shop Measurement work as also for fine measurement required for standardisation of instruments and gauges. This laboratory is suitably air-conditioned for these purposes.”

The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1966 mentions that The Senate met seven times during the year, while the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1967 notes that The Senate met six times during the year.  Prof. B. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1966 mentions that the Thermodynamics and Combustion Engineering Laboratory was completed in the year under report (1966-1967). According to the Mechanical Engineering Department website of IIT Madras, Thermodynamics and Combustion Engineering Laboratory is one of the five thermal engineering laboratories of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras (As of September 2021).
