This label is affixed to the front cover of the physical photograph album which is available in the Heritage Centre. Mr. Gourishankar, the photographer, would have taken pains to have a custom-made label produced for the album.

Institute Days began with official programmes, including the Director’s address, the reading of annual reports and so on, followed by entertainment and variety programmes.  Prof. Bibhutibhushan Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras. He played a pivotal role in the rapid growth that took place during the initial years of the Institute. Prof. B. Sengupto was selected to be founder Director of IIT Madras in 1958, and he joined IIT Madras in 1959. Prof. Sengupto was involved in the staging of the dance drama Chandalika, an Institute Day production in 1967.   An identical…

Mr. R. Natarajan’s term as Registrar ended on 6 April 1965. This was the last Institute Day he was a part of while holding the post of Registrar.  Minjur Kanakasabhapathi Bhaktavatsalam Mudaliar (chief guest) was the Chief Minister of Madras State during his visit to IIT Madras in 1965. The chief guests who visited the institute on Institute Days were political figures and renowned people, who were held in high esteem by society.   An identical photograph can be found in the Gourishankar Collection in Album 0268 under the ID: 001/0268/IMG_0761a

Prof. G. Rouve was one of the earliest German professors to work in the Institute. He was a part of the Civil Engineering Department and the staff-in-charge of the Entertainment Committee, Institute Gymkhana. Lionel Paul (Gymkhana General Secretary) was an outstanding sportsman. He took part in a number of inter-collegiate sports tournaments and meets. He played tennis, hockey and table tennis. He also participated in track and field events. Paul was a recipient of the Governor’s Prize in 1966. Lionel Paul served as General Secretary of the student body (Gymkhana) during the final year of his B.Tech. He returned to IIT Madras for his M.Tech. in Industrial Engineering. Students perform Harikatha during the Sixth Institute Day, 1965

The Institute Days had entertainment and cultural events as part of their schedule. They consisted of dances, plays and music. An article written by T. C. A. Ramanujam in The Hindu describes Harikatha: “Harikatha as an art form can be traced back to the Ramayana days. Harikatha involves narration of a story intermingling songs relating to the story.” An identical photograph can be found in the Gourishankar Collection in Album 0268 under the ID: 001/0268/IMG_0158
