Puthenveetil Chandapillai Varghese joined IIT Madras in 1961 after working for a few years at IIT Kharagpur. Prof. Varghese served as Head of Department of Civil Engineering Department in IIT Madras from 1962 to 1973. This photograph was taken during the Sixth Institute Day. According to the Annual Report of 1964, Mr. R. Natarajan delivered his talk after Gymkhana President Prof. P. C. Varghese read out the Annual Report. Mr R. Natarajan, the Registrar, was known for his oratorical skills. His speeches and articles both were eloquently presented. The NCC Day and the inauguration of the NCC building took place on the same day, on 14 December 1965. This has been recorded in the Seventh Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-66. The inauguration took place outside the NCC building, while this photograph appears to have been taken in an open ground, where NCC Day was celebrated. NCC Day was on 14 December 1965, it was the same day that the NCC building was inaugurated by Major General Virendra Singh (Director-General, NCC). The dates have been confirmed by the Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-66. Singh had also come to IIT Madras as chief guest during NCC Day on 4 December 1963.
