In his address, Rajagopalachari noted how IIT Madras’ method of providing practical training to its students, enables them to gain a foothold in their workspace more easily. He also said, “Boys and girls of our country should be trained from the start in using their hands and not brought up in an atmosphere of pure brain work. This photograph was taken during the fourth convocation of IIT Madras in 1967. Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (carrying a cane) was the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. He served his tenure from 1959 to 1969. Prof. B. Sengupto (to Dr. Mudaliar’s left hand side) was the first Director of IIT Madras. He served his tenure from 1959 to 1967. A total of 321 students graduated in 1967. Out of 321, 259 were undergraduates, 50 postgraduates and 12 were Ph.D. scholars. Also seen in the photograph is Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, second from right). The student receiving the degree is yet to be identified.

The venue flooded with people, functioning at full capacity. The OAT was designed after the Roman amphitheatre with a seating capacity of 6000. It was inaugurated in 1962 with the visit of His Excellency Dr. Heinrich Luebke, President of the Federal Republic of Germany.
