Mr. Simpson (student receiving the prize) was adjudged the fastest man in the meet when he ran the 100 metre sprint with a timing of 11.6 seconds. This has been recorded in B. S. Sudhir Chandra’s article ‘Third Inter-IIT Meet’ in Pradeep magazine (1965). IIT Kharagpur won the Inter IIT Sports Meet that year (in 1964), for the third time in a row. According to the Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1964-65, the IIT Madras tennis team went down to Kharagpur despite Lionel Paul’s victory in two singles. Puthenveetil Chandapillai Varghese joined IIT Madras in 1961 after working for a few years at IIT Kharagpur. Prof. Varghese served as Head of Department of Civil Engineering Department in IIT Madras from 1962 to 1973. He was the Gymkhana President from 1964 up to 1967 after which Prof N. Klein took charge.
