This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. The photograph shows a large group of students possibly witnessing one of the events that took place. Through other photographs taken during the event, we know that college students from across the country and city came to IIT Madras to take part in the many events which were organized. This photograph was taken during one of the competitions held at IIT Madras’ annual event Saarang. According to the Director’s Report in the Annual Number of IIT Madras 2002-2003, Saarang was organized in the third week of January 2003. The report also mentions programmes such as “Design Contests, Paper Presentation Contests, Entrepreneurship Contests, Video Conferences, Lectures by eminent personalities, and classical and modern musical performances” were held at the event. The participant in the photograph is yet to be identified.

This photograph was taken during one of the fun events which took place during IIT Madras’ Saarang event. It appears that the participants are playing a game of ‘dog and the bone’ where the goal would be to retrieve the object in the middle (in this case a soft drink bottle) without getting tagged by the opposite team. From other photographs taken during the event, we know that there were participants from colleges across the city and country. This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. Judging by the badge worn by the student in the grey t-shirt, it is likely that he was a co-ordinator for an event or show. The text on the lanyard appears to be ‘Saarang 2003’, but this is not confirmed.  From an article in the campus publication The Fourth Estate, we know that there were more than 300 students involved in setting up Saarang 2003. This photograph was taken during one of the music performances at Saarang 2003. From a report in The Hindu, we know that a fusion show was performed on the second night of Saarang. One of the shows had the saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath perform with Moksha, the rock band. However, the band in the photograph appears to be a different group. This photograph was taken during one of the events organized at Saarang, hosted by IIT Madras. It appears that the event in this photograph consisted of a fun task where participants were challenged to bite apples tied to strings without using their hands.  Students from various colleges from across the city and country participated in the events held at Saarang, which was a five day event filled with music, lectures and other activities.

This photograph was taken during one of the competitions organized during IIT Madras’ Saarang. The students in the photograph are possibly in charge of registration for an event. One of the posters taped to the table has the word ‘eating’ written on it. Other photographs in the album suggest that there was a fun event where apples, tied to strings were hung and participants were expected to eat these without using their hands. In the photograph, Dr. M. S Swaminathan (chief guest) is seen seated next to Prof. K. A. V. Pandalai (Director) and faculty members during the 13th convocation at the Open Air Theatre, 1976. Also seen seated in the second row is Prof. C. Rama Sastry (Department of Physics). Dr. M. S. Swaminathan served as the seventh Chairman of the Board of Governors (from 1991 to 1997). In the photograph, Prof. K. A. V. Pandalai (Director) can be seen giving away a B.Tech. degree to a girl student during the 13th convocation. Also seen seated on the dais are Prof. B. S. Murthy (Department of Mechanical Engineering) and possibly Prof. N. V. C. Swamy (seated in the second row at the back). During the 13th convocation, which took place on 20 August 1976, 574 degrees were awarded in total.
