This photograph was most likely taken just before the kumbhabhishekam of Jalakanteshwara Temple in IIT Madras. The ceremony took place in the presence of Puduperiyavar in 1965. The temple’s deities are Lord Shiva (in the form of Lord Jalakanteshwara) and Devi Katyayani, his consort. The temple construction started in 1962 as advised by Mahaperiyavar, 68th head of the Kanchi Matha. The construction was completed in 1965 after which the formalities took place. Devotees and priests can be seen gathered around the homa or fire ritual. Puduperiyavar visited IIT Madras when the Jalakanteshwara Temple was opened after renovation. The kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 18 June 1965 in his presence. Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya was known as Puduperiyavar. He was the head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Pitham, also known as the Kanchi Matha.

It is likely that this photograph was taken immediately before the kumbhabhishekam of the Jalakanteshwara Temple at IIT Madras took place. Puduperiyavar, the head of the Kanchi Matha was present during the function.  According to an article, the temple had recently completed renovation after three years of reconstruction. In order to consecrate the deities and the temple, the kumbhabhishekam was organized. Campus residents, staff members and faculty members attended the function.

Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya was known as Puduperiyavar. He was the head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Pitham, also known as the Kanchi Matha. Puduperiyavar visited IIT Madras when the Jalakanteshwara Temple was opened after renovation. The kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 18 June 1965 in his presence. Seen in the photograph, Puduperiyavar (seated at platform), Prof. R. Krishnamurthi (Head of Humanities Department, in first row, wearing glasses) and Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, to Prof. Krishnamurthi’s left hand side).

This photograph was taken during the kumbhabhishekam of Jalakanteshwara Temple at IIT Madras. It was attended by residents of the campus. This included staff members, faculty and their families. Puduperiyavar, the 69th head of the Kanchi Matha, Kanchipuram attended the ceremony. He is seen carrying the vessel in the photograph.

Kanchi Kamakoti Peethadhipathi Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamiji, commonly known as Puduperiyavar, was the 69th head of the Kanchi Matha, a Hindu institution based in Kanchipuram. He visited IIT Madras to conduct the kumbhabhishekam, or consecration of the Jalakanteshwara Temple.  The temple construction was completed in 1965, donned a new look and the devotees poured in for this event.    Seen in the image, Puduperiyavar (extreme left) and Prof. R. Krishnamurthi (Head of Humanities Department, fourth from left).

In the photograph, a priest pours holy water on the vimana to conduct the kumbhabhishekam. The vimana itself reportedly weighs 300 kilograms according to an article about the temple’s history. The Jalakanteshwara Temple was constructed in 1962 in order to conduct worship for a Shiva lingam which was previously worshiped by residents of villages near the lake. After the renovation was completed in 1965, the kumbhabhishekam was also performed. During his visit to IIT Madras, Mahaperiyavar (Kanchi Kamakoti Peethadhipathi Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamiji) visited the Jalakanteshwara Temple on campus. It was upon his instruction that the deities were worshiped as Jalakanteshwara and Devi Katyayani. The Shiva linga was placed in a temple which was constructed to worship the God. Mahaperiyavar visited IIT Madras around eight months after the kumbhabhishekam or consecration ritual was done in June 1965.
