From the picture, we can assume that the event was pulled off in a grand manner. The place seems to be buzzing with activity as the individuals take their refreshments. The distinguished guests were seated at the far end near the sign boards. Institute Days of IIT Madras in the 1960s were known for their cultural performances and shows, which consisted of dances, plays and songs, among other entertainment programmes. There was also an award distribution ceremony where students, staff and faculty members were awarded prizes for their contributions to the institute in the field of academics and extracurricular activities. Institute Days of IIT Madras in the 1960s were known for their cultural performances and shows, which consisted of dances, plays and songs, among other entertainment programmes. There was also an award distribution ceremony where students, staff and faculty members were awarded prizes for their contributions to the institute in the field of academics and extracurricular activities. The performers are yet to be identified.

This photograph was taken during the Second Institute Day of IIT Madras. Mr. Ebert was an Expert Workshop Staff Member. In 1959, he worked for three months as a planner for I.I.T. Madras on the staff of Prof. Dr. R. A. Kraus at Bonn. He joined the institute on 14 April 1959.    R. Natarajan, the first Registrar of IIT Madras, is one of the key figures who played a significant role in the inception of the Institute during the initial stages. On the stage from the left, Mr. C. Subramaniam (Minister of Education for Madras State and chief guest), Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) and Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras).  Chidambaram Subramaniam (also known as CS), was an Indian politician and activist. Subramaniam was also present at the inauguration function of the Computer Centre of IIT Madras in 1973. At the time, he had just completed his tenure as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission (1971-1972). Prof. Bibhutibhushan Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras (1959 to 1967). He played…

This photograph was taken during the Second Institute Day of IIT Madras. Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (wife of Director B. Sengupto) is seated (third from left) at the table. In an interview with Prof. Ajit Kolar, Mr. R. Natarajan, the first Registrar of IIT Madras describes Mrs. Shanti Sengupto as “a gift to us”. He goes on to say that “as the first lady of the campus, she was very social, she didn’t have any airs about her”.

The chief guest for this Institute Day was Mr. C. Subramaniam (Minister of Education for Madras State). Syed Abdul Aleem (Electrical Engineering Department, second from left) went on to become the Student Secretary. Mr. C. Subramaniam was the Minister for Education, Law and Finance for Madras State from 1952 to 1962. In an interview with Prof. Ajit Kolar, Mr. R. Natarajan, the first Registrar of IIT Madras, says that “Subramaniam was a very dynamic minister, he was always thinking of the country and the state”.  Mr. C. Subramaniam was also present at the inauguration function of the Computer Centre of IIT Madras in 1973. At the time, he had just completed his tenure as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission (1971-1972).

Subramaniam (Minister of Education of Madras State and chief guest, Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors), Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras) and Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul General, Federal Republic of Germany).    The board behind the guests of honour appears to have photographs pasted on it, although it is hard to tell who or what the photographs are of.
