The group are in the kitchen or dining hall of the hostel, as can be seen from the utensils on the shelves.  In the picture, from left, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, in dark suit), Mr. S. S. Mani (Warden of Alakananda Hostel and Workshop Superintendent, at the doorway), chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras, in turban), Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh (wife of the Governor) and Mr. T. N. Venkataraman (Chief Security Officer, in white uniform).

This photograph was taken during the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel in 1966. According to the April 1966 edition of Campastimes, the programme started with the cutting of the ribbon by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh, followed by tree planting.  From the photographs available, we can guess that at least four trees were planted in the hostel by the chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras), Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (the Director’s wife) and Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh. Tree planting was followed by the…

This photograph was taken during the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel. The hostel was declared open by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of the Governor of Madras Sardar Ujjal Singh, by cutting a ribbon. The visitors’ book has the signatures of eminent persons who visited IIT Madras between 1963 and 1991. The signatures of both the Governor and his wife are to be found in the book.   Also in the photograph are Prof. R. K. Gupta (Humanities Department, left) and Mr. S. S. Mani (Workshop Superintendent, in dark suit), who served as the first Warden of the new hostel.

Alakananda Hostel was inaugurated by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh by the cutting of a ribbon. Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras) was the chief guest at the event. There was also tree planting by Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (the director’s wife) and Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh to mark the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel, followed by a speech by the Director. The April 1966 issue of Campastimes informs us that there was tea next, after which the Governor gave a speech and students were introduced to him, possibly by the Alakananda Warden Mr. S. S. Mani. Alakananda Hostel, the ninth hostel to be built in IIT Madras, was inaugurated by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, the wife of the Governor of Madras.  Seen in the photograph are, (facing camera, from left) Prof. R. K. Gupta (Humanities Department), Mr. S. S. It is very likely that this photograph was taken in the common room of the hostel judging by the magazines placed on the tables.  Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras and chief guest, second from left) is escorted by Mr. T. N. Venkataraman (Chief Security Officer, extreme left) and Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, third from left). Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (the Director’s wife, fourth from left) accompanies Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh (wife of the chief guest, sixth from left).

This photograph was taken during the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel in 1966. The hostel was declared open by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras). The Governor is seen conversing with the first Warden of the hostel, Mr. S. S. Mani, who was the Superintendent of the Workshop at IIT Madras.  Also in the picture are Ms. Janaki Seshadri (in white saree) and Ms. Usha Rangan, the first women students enrolled in the 5-year B.Tech. programme of the institute.
