This was the first Inter-IIT Sports Meet to be held in IIT Madras. In the Sixth Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965, It is reported that Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the prize distribution ceremony and gave away the prizes.  Seen in the photograph are, Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (presenting the prize) and behind him Prof. B. Sengupto (Director). The student receiving the prize is yet to be identified. This photograph was probably taken during the closing ceremony of the meet, which was on 31 December.  From left, Mr. R. Natarajan (Registrar), Prof. M. V. C. Sastri (Chemistry Department), and Prof. P. C. Varghese (Gymkhana President).

According to B. S. Sudhir Chandra’s article in the first issue of ‘Pradeep’, the high jump event attracted a large audience. Chandra reports that Ganguly of IIT Bombay cleared a height of five feet, eight and a quarter inches, which bettered the previous year’s record by 4 inches. IIT Madras’ Dandapani came in second at the event. The student in the photograph is yet to be identified.

This was the first time that the Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras. IIT Kharagpur had won the previous two meets which were held in Bombay (1961) and Kharagpur (1963). IIT Kharagpur managed to make it a hat trick of wins when they clinched the trophy once again at IIT Madras. It is not clear who the student in the photograph is. This photograph was also published in the Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1964-65. An identical photograph can be found in the Central Photographic Section Collection in Album 0001 under the ID: 001/0001/IMG_0101_1

The photograph was taken at the Third Inter-IIT Sports Meet. There was a cultural programme which took place (most likely in the Open Air Theatre) during the course of the meet. Some of the cultural programmes included plays and group songs. The performances were carried out by students from IIT Madras as well as the other IITs. Mr. K. V. Rangaswami (Civil Engineering Department, second batch) can be seen seated (fourth from left). The other members of the troupe are yet to be identified.

Dr. Mudaliar, the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras presented the prizes and presided over the ceremony. The winners of the meet were IIT Kharagpur. IIT Bombay and IIT Madras came second and third respectively. Others present in the photograph are, Mr. Syed Abdul Aleem (Student Secretary, third from left) and Mr. Srinivasan (Physical Training Instructor, fourth from left) and Prof. B. The Inter-IIT Sports Meet took place for the first time at IIT Madras. Mansoor Ali Khan was the chief guest for the event. Khan was the Indian test cricket team captain when he visited IIT Madras. On this day, the stadium was also inaugurated at IIT Madras. The event took place from 28 to 31 December in 1964. Seen in the photograph, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, second row extreme right) and Mansoor Ali Khan (chief guest, to Prof. Sengupto’s right hand side). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
