In the photograph, Malcolm Panthaki (Civil Engineering, batch of 1984) can be seen near the microphone, and various other students are seated engaged in a discussion. The music quiz was an event that covered a broad spectrum of music. The rules were identical to the main quiz, however one significant difference was that individuals participated in teams of three in the music quiz, as compared to two sets of six, in the main quiz. The Western Music Group competition was preceded by auditions after which five groups were chosen to compete, that were held prior to the competition for Madras teams and during the competition for outstation teams. During the Western Solo event at Mardi Gras, participants were provided with an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, an accordion, an electric organ and a drum set. For the western group event, participants were provided a ‘Tama’ drum set, Fender and Ibanez guitars and basses, keyboards and pedals for special effects. The Western Music Group event was preceded by ‘camera auditions’, in which the best five groups were chosen for the finals. The auditions were a fairly informal affair that included a 15 minute playing time per team.
