In 1964, Mr. S. R. Thangavelu (B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering) won the coveted President’s Prize (best academic record). Part of the first batch of students, he was also the first gold medalist in the Institute. Mr. S. R. Thangavelu also received an Institute Merit Prize during the ceremony. He finished his pre-university at P.S.G. Arts College in Coimbatore after which he joined IIT Madras for the B. Tech. course.

After graduating, Mr. S. R. Thangavelu worked for a year and a half at Ashok Leyland as a trainee. Then, he returned to IIT for an Industrial Engineering Diploma (PGDIIT). On completion, he eventually went on to receive his Ph.D. in 1976. From 1970 to 2005 he worked for a number for companies such as American Can Company, AT & T, Lucent Technologies and Boeing. He retired in 2006.
