Saarang is the annual cultural and social fest of IIT Madras. It is usually held during January. The event spans over several days, involving competitions and shows. Students from various colleges in the city and country participate in the events organized at IIT Madras. The photograph shows one of the trophies which was handed out to the students. It appears that the text written on the trophy is ‘Best College Trophy’.   

The rock show at Saarang is one of the most anticipated events. Bands from across the country and world have performed at IIT Madras. In this year, the band Brahma from Mumbai performed at the Open Air Theatre with their electrifying thrash metal. The photograph shows vocalist Devraj Sanyal (left) along with a student in the audience. Sanyal appears to be wearing a band t-shirt with the words ‘Virgo Music’ clearly visible. This photograph shows John Ferns, guitarist of the thrash metal band Brahma performing at IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. Brahma was one of the leading bands in India at the time. Formed in 1993, the Mumbai based metallers released a studio album in the 1990s before releasing a few more in the 2000s and 2010s. Ferns started playing the guitar at the age of 16. He was initially a self-taught guitarist who later took formal lessons to learn music theory. He was inspired by the likes of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. His playing style comprises metal, rock, blues and neo-classical.
