A group of students posing for a photograph at Mardi Gras ’83

Cultural Events , Student Activities

In the photograph, students from Mount Carmel College as well as other colleges can be seen posing for a photograph in the same location in which the informal music events were held.

While the music events and performances, especially the professional shows, at Mardi Gras took place at the Open Air Theatre, the art events were traditionally held at Shanti Kunj. Mardi Gras was held from 1974 to 1995. The cultural festival from 1996 onwards was named ‘Saarang’. The first ‘Saarang’ took place between 25 to 30 January 1996. In an India Today newspaper article from 1999, Bhaskar Prabhakara, the then Cultural Secretary had mentioned “as saarang is a deer found on the campus, we adopted that name."
