A view of the Computer Sciences Block, 1988

Campus Buildings , Inaugurations , Visiting VIPs

The Computer Sciences Block, also referred to as the Computer Centre Block in the Annual Reports of IIT Madras, 1986 and 1987, was a newly constructed building which was built to house the Siemens 7580-E Computer System. It was constructed at a cost of 90 lakh rupees.

The Siemens system was gifted to IIT Madras by the Federal Republic of Germany. The Indian Government contributed around 18 percent of the cost according to a Campastimes interview with the Computer Centre manager Mr. P. Seshasayi. Reportedly, the cost of the entire system was two crore rupees.

In order to officially gift the system to IIT Madras, political figures and diplomats from the Federal Republic of Germany visited the Institute. They also visited the Computer Sciences Block where the terminals were kept during this visit. The main event was held at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT).
