The photograph shows some of the distinguished guests and administrators who were present at the 20th convocation. The photograph was taken at the Student Activities Centre (SAC) where the event was held. The SAC was a recently constructed building at the Institute at the time. The 20th convocation was the first to be held at this venue.
Seen in the photograph are from left, Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest), Mrs. Indira Sivasailam (wife of Mr. A. Sivasailam, second from left behind the first row), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture, fourth from left, in the convocation robes), Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director of IIT Madras, fifth from left) and Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, eighth from left in front row). The other personalities in the photograph are yet to be identified.
