This photograph was taken at the newly built Computer Sciences Block. It was taken during the visit of Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) to the Institute. The reason for his visit was to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. Although the system arrived in 1987 and was functioning from December in that year, the official handing over was in March 1988 in an event held at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT). During his visit, Mr. Klein visited the new block along with the other German guests and visitors.

In the image we can see Mr. Hans Klein (seated) and Mr. P. Seshasayi (Manager, Computer Centre, to Mr. Klein’s left hand side).
