The chief guest and speaker at IIT Madras’s third convocation, which was held on the 30th of July, 1966 was Sir C. V. Raman, the Indian physicist, Nobel laureate and Bharat Ratna recipient. On the day of the event, upon reaching the campus, Sir C. V. Raman was received by Prof. B. Sengupto, Director of the Institute, and Mr. C. V. Sethunathan, Registrar. The third convocation invitation card was simple and formal. It was made using firm cartridge paper that was cream coloured. The invitation was printed as a bi-fold-landscape card (cover dimensions: 17.5 cm × 12.6 cm). The information inside the card included details about the programme and chief guest/speaker, specific instructions for attendance and R.S.V.P. details.
