In the April 1967 edition of Campastimes, the front page article is about the performance: “The ‘Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam’ did not do justice to Firadusi, though the setting was fabulous.” Firdausi was a Persian poet who wrote one of the greatest national epics, the Shahnameh. Plays were an integral part of the entertainment programmes during the Institute Days of the 1960s at IIT Madras.
A photograph similar to this one has been published in the April 1968 edition of Campastimes. According to Campastimes, the performance was staged by German residents. The association between IIT Madras and Germany goes a long way back, to the very foundation of the institute, which was envisioned by important figures in Indian and German politics. Chandalika is a dance drama written by Rabindranath Tagore. According to the 1967 April edition of Campastimes the play was “produced and directed by Mrs. Director and the Director. Or as the M.C. put it, directed by the Director, who was directed by Mrs. Director.” The Director then was Prof. B. Sengupto, and his wife was Mrs. Shanti Sengupto.
