This was the first convocation to be held at the newly opened Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was inaugurated on the same day. According to the Annual Report of 1983, 216 students were awarded the B.Tech., 178 the M.Tech., 52 the M.Sc., 60 the M.S. and 72 the Ph.D. degree of the Institute. The chief guest for the event was none other than the President of India, Mr. Giani Zail Singh. The event was was also attended by Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Minister for Education and Culture, Government of India) and Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay). Dr. Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during this event.
