The photograph was taken on the 20th convocation day in 1983. Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest) inaugurated the newly built Student Activities Centre (SAC) on the same day. In the photograph, Mr. Giani Zail Singh (right) plants a sapling to commemorate the inauguration of the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Also seen in the photograph is (wearing spectacles) Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director of IIT Madras).

This photograph was taken on the 20th convocation day of IIT Madras. This was the first convocation to be held at the newly opened Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was inaugurated on the same day. According to the Annual Report of 1983, 216 students were awarded the B.Tech., 178 the M.Tech., 52 the M.Sc., 60 the M.S. and 72 the Ph.D. degree of the Institute. According to IIT Madras alumnus N. S. Vinodh, this photograph was taken on the way to Mahabalipuram possibly in 1987. It appears that a few students from the Civil Engineering department had gone there for a picnic. Seen in the photograph, from left, Satish Kumar, Ramabramham, Murari, Pranesh, Sudhir, Jaishankar, Subramani and Ananth. (Identified by N. S. Vinodh).

This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. Dr. Ramanna appears to be holding a list of some sort, possibly containing the names of graduates or awardees. It is mentioned in the Annual Report of the year 1983-1984 that Dr. Raja Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 20th convocation. Seen in the photograph are Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay, first from left, standing) and Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director of IIT Madras, second from left, standing). 

This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation in 1983. According to the Annual Report of 1983, the Silver Jubilee Convocation was held on 18 September 1983. The chief guest for the event was none other than the President of India, Mr. Giani Zail Singh. The event was was also attended by Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Minister for Education and Culture, Government of India) and Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay). Dr. Ramanna was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during this event.

This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. The Academic Procession is a formation of two rows of faculty members, headed by the Registrar. The Director and the chief guest are the last two to enter the convocation hall. As the chief guest enters the hall, the first six bars of the National Anthem are played. The persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
