The photograph was taken during the 20th convocation which took place in the Student Activities Centre (SAC) in 1983. A model of SAC, which was newly built, is displayed on a table to the right of the photograph. Prior to the construction of the Student Activities Centre (SAC), the Open Air Theatre (OAT) was used as a venue for convocations. Rains would cause water to percolate in the OAT, making it difficult to hold the event. The SAC emerged as a solution to this problem.

In the year 1983, 216 students were awarded the B.Tech., 178 the M.Tech., 52 the M.Sc., 60 the M.S. and 72 the Ph.D. degree of the Institute.
