This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. The formal function was held at the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was newly constructed at the institute. Seen in the photograph are, in the front row, from left, Dr. Raja Ramanna (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay), Mr. A. Sivasailam (Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras), Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest), Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture), Dr. H. V. This photograph was taken during the 20th convocation. The convocation was held during the Silver Jubilee year of the Institute. It marked 25 years since the inception of IIT Madras. This photograph shows the front entrance to the Student Activities Centre (SAC) in 1983. The SAC was designed by the architect C. R. Narayana Rao (confirmed by P. Soundararaj).    The photograph also shows a neatly decorated logo of IIT Madras made with flowers and plants. The photograph was taken during the 20th convocation which took place in the Student Activities Centre (SAC) in 1983. A model of SAC, which was newly built, is displayed on a table to the right of the photograph.  Prior to the construction of the Student Activities Centre (SAC), the Open Air Theatre (OAT) was used as a venue for convocations. Rains would cause water to percolate in the OAT, making it difficult to hold the event. The SAC emerged as a solution to this problem.

Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India and chief guest), addresses the audience at IIT Madras’ 20th convocation day. The function was held at the newly constructed Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was inaugurated earlier in the day. Mr. Singh was the seventh President of India, serving his term from 1982 to 1987.

He served his term from 1982 to 1987. The venue of the 20th convocation was the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was inaugurated that day. Convocations took place at the Open Air Theatre (OAT) prior to the construction of SAC. In the case of rains, the OAT would get flooded, hampering the proceedings of the event. The SAC was an indoor facility which was far more convenient in the case of rains. This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture) presents the degree to the student. According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1983-84, a total of 580 students received their degrees during the 20th Convocation, pushing the total number of degrees awarded by the Institute to 9537. In the year 1983, 216 students were awarded the B.Tech., 178 the M.Tech., 52 the M.Sc., 60 the M.S. and 72 the Ph.D. degree of the Institute. The B.Tech. robes were maroon, while the others were an off-white hue. Seen in the…

This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. It appears that a section of the audience was reserved for prize winners as mentioned on the board that is placed near the first row. The prizes distributed were the President of India Prize (for the student of the B.Tech. degree course with the best academic record), Governor’s Prize (for all round proficiency in B.Tech. degree courses/curricular and extra-curricular) and Merit Prizes (for the students with the best academic record in each discipline of each course).
