This photograph was possibly taken before a performance at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). We think that it was taken on the opening night of Saarang when the singer Shaan performed at the Institute. Shaan performed at the opening night of Saarang. The show was sold out and the Open Air Theatre (OAT) was packed with crowds. According to a report in The Fourth Estate, “The Shaan show was witness to a sellout crowd that waited while the performer himself bypassed a number of Chennai city traffic rules to arrive an hour late.” The report goes on to talk about how the audience enjoyed themselves. A report in The Hindu notes how the singer had a sore throat, but managed to perform for two and a half hours, keeping the audience on their feet throughout the show. We are not sure who the other…

Taken on the opening night at Saarang, this photograph shows a section of the audience seated at the Open Air Theatre (OAT) during the show by singer Shaan. The OAT was packed with a large audience. According to The Fourth Estate, the audience had to wait for an hour before the singer arrived, due to some unforeseen circumstances. Nevertheless, it was a sellout crowd and they “thoroughly enjoyed themselves” according to the report. We do not know who the persons in the photograph are.
