Saarang 2000 was a 6 day cultural festival that was held from 21st-26th January 2000. It was formally inaugurated by Prof. C. R. Muthukrishnan (Deputy Director, IITM). The inauguration was followed by a classical dance show by Ms. Shoba Natarajan (a disciple of Sri Vempati Sathyam). Over the course of 6 days, a number of literary and cultural events took place at various venues across the campus. Sardar Ujjal Singh was the Governor of Punjab (September 1965 – 26 June 1966) and the Governor of Tamil Nadu (28 June 1966 - 16 June 1967). This photograph was taken when he visited IIT Madras in 1966 as the chief guest for the inauguration of Alakananda hostel. In the photograph, Sardar Ujjal Singh is seen planting a sapling on the grounds of Alakananda hostel to mark its inauguration.  The Heritage Centre would be grateful to receive more information regarding this photograph. Sardar Ujjal Singh was the Governor of Punjab and the Governor of Tamil Nadu (28 June 1966 - 16 June 1967). He visited IIT Madras on two occasions as chief guest: the inauguration of Alakananda hostel (1966) and on the 8th Institute Day (15 March 1967). This photograph was probably taken during the Institute Day. The Heritage Centre would be grateful to receive more information regarding this photograph. This photograph was taken during the inauguration of the Alakananda hostel on the IIT Madras campus in 1966. Sardar Ujjal Singh was the chief guest for the occasion. Sardar Ujjal Singh was the Governor of Punjab (1 September 1965 – 26 June 1966) and the Governor of Tamil Nadu (28 June 1966 - 16 June 1967). In the front row of the photograph, from left to right are Mrs. Shanti Sengupto, the wife of Prof. B. Sengupto, Sardar Ujjal Singh, Mrs. Ujjal Singh and Prof. B.
