The eighth convocation of IITM took place on July 31, 1971. The event began at 05:00 pm that Saturday and the chief guest and speaker for the event was Prof. M. G. K. Menon. Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the event. The majority of the event consisted of the conferment of degrees and awards which was followed by the chief guest’s convocation address.

The eighth convocation of IITM was held at 05:00 pm on Saturday, the 31st July, 1971 in the Open Air Theatre of the Institute. At the ceremony, Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, IITM) conferred the degrees and diplomas on 225 candidates who attended the convocation and in absentia on 212 candidates who could not be present.

The Institute pledge was led by Mr. Satish Ramadhyani (Mechanical Engineering), the recipient of the President of India Prize. The eighth convocation of IITM was held at 05:00 pm on Saturday, the 31st July, 1971 in the Open Air Theatre of the Institute. At the ceremony, Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, IITM) conferred the degrees and diplomas on 225 candidates who attended the convocation and in absentia on 212 candidates who could not be present.

Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon, F.R.S. (28 August 1928 – 22 November 2016) was a, Indian physicist and policy maker. He played a prominent role in the development of science and technology in India. One of his important contributions was developing the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. He undertook experiments with cosmic rays to explore the properties of fundamental particles. He was actively involved in setting up balloon flight experiments and underground experiments with cosmic ray neutrinos in the mines at Kolar Gold Fields.
