The event began at 05:00 pm that Saturday and the chief guest and speaker for the event was Prof. M. G. K. Menon (Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay and Chairman, Electronics Commission, Govt. of India). Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the event. The eighth convocation of IITM was held at 05:00 pm on Saturday, the 31st July, 1971 in the Open Air Theatre of the Institute. At the ceremony, Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, IITM) conferred the degrees and diplomas on 225 candidates who attended the convocation and in absentia on 212 candidates who could not be present.

Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon F.R.S. (Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay and Chairman, Electronics Commission, Govt. of India) was an Indian physicist and policy maker. He played a prominent role in the development of science and technology in India. One of his important contributions was developing the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. He undertook experiments with cosmic rays to explore the properties of fundamental particles.
