This photograph was taken during the fourth convocation of IIT Madras. C. Rajagopalachari, former Chief Minister of Madras State (1952-1954) was the chief guest for the convocation.  A total of 321 students graduated in 1967. B. Ramaswami and V. Seshadri both qualified for the award of the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering. They both completed their research in Automatic Control and Computation Systems. A total of 12 Ph.D. scholars received their degrees in the year 1967.

A few German professors are seen in the audience. The second Indo-German Agreement was signed in June, 1966. It strengthened the tie between the two countries in terms of technical education and development. Some of the provisions of the agreement included the addition of new laboratories, training Indian teachers and technicians in German institutions, and the visits of German professors and specialists from the Technical University, Aachen, earlier in 1967. Mrs. M. S. Subbulakshmi is seen in the second row (third from left).  Mr. R. Natarajan (second from left in first row) was the first Registrar of IIT Madras. He had retired over a year prior to the fourth convocation.    Mrs. M. S. Subbulakshmi, “Nightingale of India”, as Sarojini Naidu called her, is one of the key figures in Indian classical music. She is also a recipient of India’s highest civil honour; ‘Bharat Ratna’, which was awarded to her in 1998. Academic processions were a part of convocations. They were usually led by the Registrar of the Institute. It is a tradition where dignitaries wear convocation robes and enter the convocation hall before the event proceeds. In the image, leading the procession, Mr. C. V. The President’s Prize was awarded to the best student of the B. Tech. Degree Course. Gurusharan S. Sidhu, who won the prize in 1967. In Vol. V, No. 4 of Campastimes (April 1967), R. K. Prakash’s humorous poem titled ‘Sidhu’ accompanied by a caricature of Sidhu, by Vasu, describes Sidhu’s academic prowess. The poem makes note of Sidhu’s incomparable nature; “Few guys can with Sidhu compare, / In his work, no efforts does he spare”. Also seen in the image, Prof. B.
