It is likely that Prof. Koch (Physics Department) was receiving a prize in the photograph, although this cannot be ascertained.  Prizes were distributed at Institute Days to students, staff and faculty members of IIT Madras for their contributions to the institute in academic and extracurricular activities.   Chidambaram Subramaniam (Minister of Education for Madras State and chief guest), also known as CS, was an Indian politician and activist. Father Murphy was an English professor at Loyola College. He was instrumental in setting up the Vanavani School on the IIT Madras campus in 1963. Dr. A. L. Mudaliar was the first Chairman of IIT Madras who took up his role in 1959 and served as Chairman until 1969. In the photograph, one can observe a number of cars parked. The car on the left with its rear facing the camera is the Standard Super 10, which used to be manufactured in India under license at Vandalur Standard Motors factory. Institute Days of IIT Madras in the 1960s were known for their cultural performances and shows, which consisted of dances, plays and songs, among other entertainment programmes. There was also an award distribution ceremony where students, staff and faculty members were awarded prizes for their contributions to the institute in the field of academics and extracurricular activities.

This photograph was taken during the prize distribution ceremony during the Second Institute Day. Mr. Subramanian (Minister of Education for Madras State) was the chief guest at the event.  Anand Singh Bawa was one of the people who established the popular magazine Campastimes. He was also the first editor of the same. Prior to setting up the magazine, Bawa had also edited the Annual Number. Institute Days were held towards the end of the academic year and consisted of cultural programmes, speeches and a prize distribution ceremony. Students, staff and faculty who contributed to the Institute in various ways were given prizes for their work. Seated in the first row is Prof. Wolfgang Scheer (Mechanical Engineering Department, first from left) and Prof. W. Koch (Physics Department, third from left).    Dr. Wolfgang Scheer was born in 1923, and joined IIT Madras at the age of 36 in 1959. This photograph was taken during the Second Institute Day of IIT Madras.  The person in the centre is Father Murphy. He was an English professor at Loyola College. He was one of the persons responsible for founding the Vanavani Primary School at IIT Madras in 1963. The gentlemen on either side of Father Murphy are yet to be identified.

Prizes were distributed at Institute Days to students, staff and faculty members of IIT Madras for their contributions to the Institute in academic and extracurricular activities. The chief guests often presented the prizes. The chief guest for this Institute Day was Mr. C. Subramaniam (Minister of Education for Madras State).  The boy in the photograph is yet to be identified. Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras) can be seen at the extreme left.

Institute Days of IIT Madras in the 1960s were known for their cultural performances and shows, which consisted of dances, plays and songs, among other entertainment programmes. There was also an award distribution ceremony where students, staff and faculty members were awarded prizes for their contributions to the institute in the field of academics and extracurricular activities. Prof. Werner Koch is seen in the centre (white shirt and black tie). Dr. Koch was a German Professor of Physics who joined IIT Madras on 3 July 1959.

Mr R. Natarajan, the Registrar, was known for his oratorical skills. His speeches and articles both were eloquently presented. His popular articles centred on the game of cricket are available in various Annual Numbers, and several other publications. Judging by the amused look on the faces of the guests of honour at the dais, we can assume that Mr. R.
