Mr. Tata visited IIT Madras in December, 1969. He visited some of the laboratories and facilities at the Institute.  On the same day that Mr. Tata visited IIT, he met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the latter’s residence. The previous day, he received the Business Leadership Award from the Madras Management Association (MMA) on 15 December 1969, and delivered a lecture at the event after receiving the award.  The photograph was taken in the Conference Room on the fifth floor of the Administration Block. The Administration Block had been completed and occupied in 1968.…

Mr. Tata visited IIT Madras in December, 1969. He visited some of the laboratories and facilities at the Institute during his visit.  The wind tunnel in the photograph was a part of the Applied Mechanics Department and was located in the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (One of the workshop-type laboratories). It was assembled by a team of German technicians and it was operational by the late 1960s.  Technically, it is a low-speed closed circuit, open test section variant with a single fan variable speed DC motor Ward Leonard Drive. In the early years of the Institute an autograph book was maintained and the visiting VIPs were requested to sign it. This book can now be found at the Heritage Centre. The photograph was taken in the Conference Room on the fifth floor of the Administration Block. The Administration Block had been completed and occupied in 1968. Mr. Tata’s inscription in the autograph book reads, “I wish I could have spent more time in this fine institution. The wind tunnel was a part of the Applied Mechanics Department and was located in the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (One of the workshop-type laboratories).
