In 1988, several German political figures and diplomats visited IIT Madras. The reason for this visit was to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. Although the system arrived with 80 terminals in 1987, the official ceremony was held only in March 1988. One of the German guests was Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador, Federal Republic of Germany, right). In the photograph, he appears to be receiving a memento from Mr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) while Prof. L. S. Srinath (Director of IIT Madras) watches from the background (left).…

This photograph was taken during the event held to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras. The Indo-German Agreement had made a provision for a computer to be provided to the Institute and Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) took part in the official proceedings. This photograph was taken at the Bose-Einstein Guest House at IIT Madras. It is likely that the visitors and guests were greeted and welcomed at the guest house before the event. The occasion was the handing of the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras by the Federal Republic of Germany. Mr. Klein was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in 1988 in order to officially hand the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, as agreed upon in the Indo-German Agreement. In 1987, IIT Madras received a Siemens 7580-E Computer System as a gift from the Federal Republic of Germany. It was given to the Institute as part of an Indo-German Agreement. The official function for handing over the system was held in March 1988, in the presence of important political figures and diplomats from the Federal Republic of Germany. Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) officially handed the system to IIT Madras. Seen in the photograph is Mr. A. L. When the Federal Republic of Germany gifted the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, there were 80 terminals which were also sent. According to a Campastimes interview from February 1988, Mr. P. Seshasayi (Head of Computer Centre) says that they had planned to keep around 30-35 terminals at the Computer Centre, while the rest would be in the campus. Initially, all the terminals were kept at the Centre to judge the response times. Mr. Klein was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in 1988 in order to officially hand the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, as agreed upon in the Indo-German Agreement. Although the event took place in 1988, the system had been installed at the Institute towards the end of 1987. The Siemens Computer would replace the older IBM 370 system and Campastimes wasted no time in writing about this.
