Mr. Kodardas Kalidas Shah was the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1971 to 1976. He visited IIT Madras on 13 April 1974 to formally initiate the final phase of construction of the swimming pool which was nearing completion at the time. Initially, the function was supposed to happen on 4 April 1974, but it was postponed to 13 April. According to a detailed note about the programme prepared by the Institute, the Governor would reach the Open Air Theatre (OAT) at 7:10 p.m. after being welcomed at the “Old Guest House” at 7 p.m. In this photograph, he is welcomed by Prof. K. The Composite Structures (FRP) Research Centre, also known as the Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP) Centre was started at IIT Madras in March 1974. It was started due to the increased use of FRP, on a global scale, for advanced technology applications as well as for commercial and domestic applications. Prior to the formation of the Centre, in 1960, research and development activities in this area was initiated by the Department of Aeronautical Engineering (IIT Madras) because of the possible and increasing applications of FRP in the Aerospace field in India.
