When IIT Madras was given the Siemens 7580-E Computer System from the Federal Republic of Germany, the Institute also got 80 new terminals. They were initially installed at the Computer Centre and it is likely that they were distributed across the campus later. The Indo-German Agreement had made a provision for the West German Government to give IIT Madras a computer, which was selected by the Germans. According to a Campastimes interview, the Indian Government had contributed around 18 percent of the cost for the computer, while the rest of it was funded by the Federal Republic of Germany…

Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador, Federal Republic of Germany) visited IIT Madras along with Mr. Hans Klein and other German visitors in order to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. The computer was gifted to IIT Madras by the West German Government as part of the Indo-German Agreement. The sapling was planted possibly to commemorate the opening of the Computer Sciences Block and to symbolize the Indo-German bond. This photograph was taken on 22 March, during the handing of the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras. The Indo-German agreement signed in 1986 made a provision for the Federal Republic of Germany to give IIT Madras the Siemens system. It was installed in a new building at IIT Madras. It was called the Computer Sciences Block. Mrs. Srinath was the wife of Prof. L. S. Srinath (Director of IIT Madras). Mrs. Seitz was the wife of the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Dr. Konrad Seitz, who was also present at the function during which this photograph was taken. This photograph was taken during the event where the Federal Republic of Germany officially handed over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras.  Mr. A. L. Mudaliar served as the sixth Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Madras, from December 1987 to January 1991. He was the son of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar, the first Chairman, and the younger brother of Dr. A. Ramachandran, the second Director of IIT Madras. An Indo-German agreement was signed in July 1986 under which a Siemens 7580-E computer was to be given to IIT Madras by the Federal Republic of Germany.
