There is a mention of the Professors’ quarters in Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy’s article in the Souvenir Volume to commemorate the visit of His Excellency Dr. Heinrich Luebke to IIT Madras on 3 December 1962 to lay the foundation stone. Mr. Ramaswamy writes that the residential quarters were being built as close to the Guindy-Adyar Road as possible to provide residents easy access to the main road and transport services. The plan was to carry out the construction of 20 Professors’ quarters as a part of the first phase of construction. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1962 confirms the completion of…
This water tank is possibly the one near the Building Sciences Block (BSB), near the road on Alumni Avenue. It is a fairly tall structure scaling at least 70-100 feet in height. As of 2014, there were a total of seven overhead water tanks on campus. The BSB water tank had a dome roof. Album 0049 does not have a photograph of the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was completed in 1983, but it does have a photograph of Quark, which was completed around 1980. Thus the date of the album is probably 1981 or 1982.
Quark was a canteen born out of the students’ interest in the early 1980s. The building was located between the hostels Saraswathi and Godavari in the hostel zone. The canteen would open late in the evening, allowing students to grab a post-dinner snack or a hot drink. In an article in The Hindu, former IITian Vijaysree Venkatraman writes that the idea for the canteen arose out of the students’ desire to have a separate building which looked different from the rest of the buildings in the IIT Madras campus. The article mentions how Quark turned out to be a hub for cyclone relief in 1985 when…
